The problem is that the things you should not buy online are the expensive ones, and they are the ones people order anyway. Cleats, gloves, and anything for a player who has never worn the item before. Here is a straight breakdown of what is worth a trip, what is not, and where to go if you are in San Antonio or the surrounding area.

Why cleats are the non-negotiable one

Cleat sizing is not the same system as sneaker sizing, and it varies between models within a single brand. A player can be correctly fitted in three different sizes across three different boots and none of them will match the number in their trainers.

When online is the better call

If you already know exactly what you want, ordering is faster and there is nothing to gain from the drive. Repeat purchases of a boot you have worn before, balls, socks, tape and spares all fall into that group, and the soccer footwear range is the same online as it is on the wall.

• Weeknights are quieter than weekends across the whole season.
• The two weeks before a season starts are the busiest of the year. If you can go earlier, go earlier.
• Mid-season, which is where we are now, is one of the better windows. The pre-season rush has passed and the winter indoor rush has not started.
• The weekend before an indoor or futsal season opens is as busy as the fall pre-season. Sort indoor shoes in advance rather than the day before.

What to bring

• The socks the player actually plays in. Match socks are thicker than everyday socks and they change the fit.
• Their current cleats, even if they are finished. What has worn out and where tells us more than a measurement does.
• The player. This is the one that gets skipped, and it is the whole point.
• Any league rules you are unsure about, particularly on studs and shin guard markings.
