Soccer Cleat Types Explained: FG, AG, TF, and Indoor

Every box has two letters on it, and most players never find out what they mean until they have already bought the wrong pair. The cleat that felt perfect in the store starts chewing up their ankles on turf, or slides out from under them on a wet field, and they blame the boot.
The boot is usually fine. It was built for a surface the player does not play on. Here is what each sole type is actually for, so you can match the soccer cleats you buy to the field you play on.

FG is the default. If someone hands you a pair of cleats without saying what they are, this is almost certainly what you have. The studs are molded directly into the soleplate and sit relatively long and widely spaced. That spacing is deliberate. On natural grass, the studs need to penetrate the surface to give you grip, and they need room between them so mud and grass clippings can clear out instead of packing in.
FG works on dry grass, damp grass, and everything in between. What it does not handle is either extreme. On a waterlogged field, the studs are not long enough to bite. On artificial turf, they cannot penetrate at all, so instead of sinking in, they push back against your foot, and the load goes straight into your knees and ankles.
AG exists because 3G and 4G turf became the surface most players actually train on, and FG was never designed for it. The studs are shorter than FG, there are more of them, and they are often hollowed out. More studs means the pressure of your body weight spreads across a larger contact area, which is the whole point. Turf does not give the way grass does, so instead of sinking in, you need to distribute the load. The hollowing adds a small amount of cushioning on top of that.
AG also protects the boot. Turf fibres and the rubber crumb underneath grind at a soleplate in a way grass never does, and an AG plate is built to take it. This is the sole type most club players in Texas should be buying, and most of them are not.
Turf shoes are a different category than AG, and the two get confused constantly. A TF sole has no studs at all. It has dozens of small, dense rubber nubs across the whole outsole, closer to a running shoe than a cleat. They are built for short-pile astroturf, hard-packed dirt, sport courts, and the kind of surface where studs would be useless or dangerous.
For a lot of players, turf shoes end up being the training shoe and the warm-up shoe rather than the match shoe. They are more comfortable to stand around in, they are kinder on a young player’s joints, and they last a long time. If a coach runs sessions on a hard surface, turf shoes are not optional.
Flat gum rubber outsole, no tread depth, non-marking so gym floors do not get scuffed. This is what indoor and futsal is played in. The grip comes entirely from the compound rather than the shape, which means indoor shoes are excellent on a clean wood or sport court floor and close to useless anywhere else. Take a pair outside onto grass, and you will slide.
Indoor shoes also tend to sit lower to the ground than cleats, which changes how the ball feels underfoot. Players moving between outdoor and futsal usually need a session or two to adjust.
SG uses removable studs, usually longer than FG and frequently metal-tipped. They screw into the soleplate and can be swapped out for different lengths depending on how wet the field is.
Two things to know before you buy them. First, they are genuinely only for wet, soft, natural grass, on a dry field, they are uncomfortable and unstable. Second, and more importantly, many youth and rec leagues in the US ban metal studs outright, and referees do check. Confirm your league rules before you spend the money. You will also need a stud key, which you can pick up with the rest of your soccer equipment.
MG is a hybrid stud pattern designed to work acceptably on both natural grass and turf. It is a compromise, and it should be treated as one.
If you play on a mix of surfaces week to week and you can only justify one pair, MG is a reasonable answer. If you play on the same surface every week, buy the sole built for that surface. MG will never be as good on grass as FG or as good on turf as AG.
Most natural grass fields across South and Central Texas are Bermuda, and by August they are dry and hard. FG works, but a conical or rounded stud is generally more forgiving on a hard field than a long-bladed one, because blades are designed to bite into softer ground and on hard-packed Bermuda they transmit more of the impact straight up into your foot.
If your field is baked solid by late summer, some players find AG more comfortable than FG even though the surface is natural grass. That is not the textbook answer, but it is a real one.
A large share of youth clubs, schools and public facilities in the San Antonio and Houston areas run on artificial turf, and plenty of players train on turf all week and play matches on grass at the weekend.
If that is you, one pair will not cover it well. AG for training, FG for matches, or MG if you genuinely have to pick one. Wearing FG on turf four days a week is the fastest way to destroy a soleplate and the most common reason a pair of cleats fails inside a season.
Indoor leagues run year-round in Texas, and the surface is not something you can improvise around. Flat non-marking soles are usually a facility requirement, not a preference, and studs of any kind will normally be turned away at the door.
Wearing firm ground cleats on artificial turf. It is the single most common error we see, and it is expensive twice over. The first cost is the boot. Turf grinds at an FG soleplate and separates studs from the plate far faster than grass ever will. Check your warranty terms before you assume you are covered, because brands commonly exclude artificial surface use on FG models.
The second cost is your body. FG studs cannot penetrate turf, so every step loads them back against the sole of your foot at concentrated points. Over a season of training, that shows up as foot pain, and in players who are still growing it can show up as worse.
If you play once a week on one surface, no. One pair matched to that surface is enough. If you train two or three times a week on turf and play matches on grass, yes, and it will save you money rather than cost you money. Two pairs used on the right surfaces routinely outlast one pair used on both, and you can put the second pair at a lower price tier without losing much. The Elite, Pro and Academy tiers are worth reading if you are trying to work out where to spend and where to save.
Sole type and fit are separate decisions and both matter. A pair with the right sole and the wrong fit will still cause problems. Come in for a PRO-fit fitting and get measured properly before you commit, sizing varies more between brands than most players expect.

You can, but you should not make a habit of it. The studs cannot penetrate the surface, so the pressure comes back into your foot at concentrated points, and the soleplate wears out much faster. An occasional match is unlikely to hurt you. A season of training on turf in FG cleats will.
AG cleats have real studs, just shorter and more numerous than FG, and they are for long-pile 3G and 4G turf. Turf shoes have no studs at all, only small rubber nubs, and they are for short-pile astroturf and hard surfaces. They are not interchangeable.
If you regularly switch between grass and turf and you only want one pair, yes. If you play on one surface consistently, a dedicated sole will perform better.
Not well. Indoor soles get their grip from a flat gum rubber compound that needs a smooth hard floor to work against. On turf you lose most of that grip, particularly when changing direction.
Look at the box or the tongue label for the two-letter code, or look at the sole. Long, widely spaced studs are FG. Short dense studs are AG. No studs but lots of small nubs is TF. Completely flat is indoor. Studs you can unscrew is SG.
